What happens when you stop eating sugar?
Since sugar is very addictive, the first few days of a sugar fast will not be easy. Your body will probably go through withdrawals.
Because our bodies react to sugar in much the same way as they do to many other addictive substances — from caffeine to cocaine — expect some adverse side effects from quitting cold turkey. Symptoms may include:
- Fatigue and lethargy
- Extreme cravings
Fortunately, those symptoms will likely only last the first few days. But even after the first week, things will only get moderately easier. There’s not much you can do to combat these side effects except ensure you’re still consuming enough calories.
Always keep healthy snacks like fruit and nuts on hand. But be careful not to combat fatigue with too much additional caffeine. As that does not help with the side effects of withdrawal.
8 hours of sleep, praying and setting time aside to relax and read helps a lot.
If you’re lucky, week two will pass largely without complaint or incident; you won’t have been fasting from sugar long enough to start losing your mind with cravings, but you’ll be over the first-week hump of undesirable side effects.
But if week two could be compared to cruising along a well-paved bike path on a new 10-speed, week three might be akin to an uphill push on a fixed-speed. cravings might return in week 3 so plan ahead to have healthy snacks handy.
Then, just like that, week four will roll around, and you’ll be back to cruising.
By week 4 of a 30 day fast you will start to notice more radiant skin and smile, beautiful hair, feel elevated energy, mental clarity and better sleeping habits.
As the last day of your scheduled fast approaches, you may even find yourself wondering if you want to break it at all.
As you break your fast, you will notice that you are satisfied with far less sugar and no longer have sugar cravings. Continue to limit your sugar intake for more long term benefits.
Besides, continue to read labels and pay attention to sneaky ways sugar is hiding in store-bought foods and ingredients. You’ll feel more in control of your diet and cravings and more capable of abstaining. Most rewardingly, you will have beautiful radiant skin.
While cookies will probably not serve you well, you can find other decadent treats that are a bit more skin-friendly. If you’re going to eat sweets or candy, it’s best to stick to a dark chocolate bar with a high cocoa content that is low in sugar. The darker the chocolate, the less sugar it will contain.
Alcoholic drinks that are high in sugar are going to be worse for your skin than other beverages.
This is because in addition to the visible effects of alcohol, your skin is going through the glycation process. Mixers, including tonic water and fruit juices, usually contain more sugar while dry spirits tend to have less sugar. If you want a glass of wine, opt for red instead of white. Red wine has less fructose.”
Continue to read labels for sneaky, hidden sugars hidden in store bought foods. There are seemingly healthy foods that are high in sugars. Such as canned fruit and flavored yogurt or granola bars. Find a recipe and make your own granola at home with simple ingredients like oatmeal, coconut oil, butter, coconut flakes, pecans, almonds etc. It’s delicious and good for your skin.
Always check the labels to make sure the food you’re eating doesn’t have high amounts of sugar. Watch out for added sugars on the ingredient list like sucrose or high fructose corn syrup.”
